Knowledge of the sciences may well be fundamental to theology but it is not enough. We need the arts as well, and religion as positive community action also.

My studies in theology made no sense, until I began to increase my knowledge and understanding of science.

Given another picture of distant stars, one wonders again at the nature of God. Who and what is God, who can be so vast and yet can be personal to us? We are certainly far beyond the old man with a beard sitting on a cloud, as in some religious art. What is God? Energy? Some sort of “force”? And yet we believe God is love. We believe, yet it is hard to wrap our human imagination around what we are talking about. I take some comfort in Augustine’s thought that, if you think you understand, then it is not God you are talking about.
