In one of her letters, Flannery O’Connor recounts a conversation between Robert Bridges and the poet Gerard Manley Hopkins. Bridges asked Hopkins how he could come to believe in God. Hopkins simply said, ‘give alms.’ This aligned with O’Connor’s sense that God can be experienced in actions of charity. It seems that this is one of the essential ways in which we can do our part, cooperating with grace.
I do think we are missing a compelling and inspiring religious narrative but I also think the individual has a role in cultivating and configuring a path of personal meaning.
in a nearby parish church in a very lively and diverse neighborhood in Toronto two years ago the aps and altar were redecorated in the Quatrocento style with an almost Cimabue Christ on the cross. As an artist I took inspiration from this period over many years only to move forward with my own understanding.
I wonder how people take in this revised 14th cy vision of Christ, all the while wishing I could grow plants and vines that would cover and enliven the entire decorated area – possibly enliven the worshipers.
Kingdom consciousness (the Christ mind) is liminal. Meaning, its introduction and access begin ONLY in that threshold space (quantum flux) between the eternal and spacetime. It does not, nor cannot arise from any material or planetary body or form, be it anatomical, intellectual, scientific, philosophical, academic, or religious. There, outside the gates on the inner temple, it can only be spoken of. Anything outside its realization within the inner temple has no eternal value. Being religious by nature, and of planetary births and religious affiliations by choice, most are neither equal to nor worthy of the challenges required to enter in. Such wisdom, like so much wasted seed, falls mostly on ears and hearts unprepared for and are therefore inhospitable to same.
