Heart of Matter: We Are Storytellers

“We are meaning makers and storytellers.
The stories we tell one another shape the meaning of our lives”.

Ilia Delio, Making All Things New

“Somos creadores de significado y narradores de historias.
Las historias que nos contamos unos a otros dan forma al significado de nuestras vidas”.

Ilia Delio, Making All Things New

What is being moved? What is being asked?

I found myself inexplicably comparing the Spanish to the English. There was a sense of fascination to it. The words drew some feeling from a deeper place. Perhaps even our language, the means by which we share our stories, contribute to the way we hold meaning. The feeling of the words seems to carry import, flavor, color as in poetry.

As we share our stories we create history too.

Said Moses, “we spend our years as a tale that is told” (Psalm 90:9). Ultimately, whether that tale is false or true, dead or alive, depends upon the overall spirit, source, and energy of the center it is oriented to.

In a post-truth age our stories need to address truths in our lives otherwise we will have difficulty making meaning from the stories we tell.

Sound and words hold such power…we need to use that creative gift wisely.

Genealogy is a wonderful way to develop stories. I’m taking a writing class to tell the story of my great uncle James Quinn. The story is about farm life in upstate NY, about his siblings and sadly, why did he live out his later years in the Almshouse. I move forward with James story so my family remembers him and loved him.
