Heart of Matter: A Sense of the Whole

Tuesday, January 24, 2023

“My understanding of catholicity, therefore, is a “sense of the whole” or “according to the whole.” The whole, however, is not a given; rather, it flows from my human consciousness and attention.

Ilia Delio, Making All Things New

“Entiendo la catolicidad como un “sentido de la totalidad” o un “estar en consonancia con la totalidad”. La totalidad no como un postulado, sino como algo que fluye desde mi conciencia y mi consideración humanas”.

Well said, Ilia. The whole is always the largest context, and the largest inclusive consciousness, not the tribal or restricted one. In that vein catholicity is to the whole what the entirety of creation is to the invisible center from which it began, flows, dances around, and inclines to at all scales. It is to all things what the pin is to a door hinge, the silent, unmoved mover around which, like a carousel, all things motor and pivot.

Still too much attention given in the Church to the “holy” in a very narrow definition of what it means to be “whole” and not enough attention to the more expansive view of the “whole” that I understand Ilia to be talking about.
