SUMMARY:Revelation in an Emerging Universe: Faith\, Science\, and Pastoral Ministry
DESCRIPTION:Revelation in an Emerging Universe: \nFaith\, Science\, and Pastoral Ministry\nwith Robert Nicastro \nFour Sessions\nWednesday Evenings\nJuly 5\, 12\, 19 and 26\n7pm – 8:30PM EST\n \nCost: $150 \nREGISTER HERE \nThe course will meet on four consecutive Wednesdays from July 5th to July 26th. Weekly sessions will last for 1 hour and 30 minutes (7:00 — 8:30 p.m. ET)\, with time allotted for presentations from the instructor and for participants to ask questions and engage in discussion. Please note that a background in science\, scripture\, or theology is not required to register\, nor is there any required reading for this course. \nDeadline for registration is July 5. \nCourse Description: \nIf someone were to ask\, “Where is God?” How would you respond? Would you raise your finger in the air and point to the sky? Or would you turn the finger on yourself and claim that your heart is the seat of the divine? Or perhaps as a third alternative\, would you simply argue that God is everywhere? Regardless of your answer\, the point is a crucial one: The question of “Where is God?” reminds us of the need for some kind of model or symbolic representation of how God and the world are related to one another. \nSince the late medieval period\, the chief task of the systematic theologian has been to describe such a relationship in a way that is intellectually coherent and biblically consistent. This task is also vitally important for the contemporary religious preacher\, teacher\, or leader whose spiritual content very often conditions the meaningfulness of the life of its recipients. Lutheran theologian and Pastor Ted Peters explains: “Implicit in the sentences\, metaphors\, images\, and allusions the preacher [or spiritual leader] employs in one’s sermon or message is a description of a single comprehensive reality in which both the listener and God are components. This is as important as it is inescapable. The verbal pictures of the world the preacher [or spiritual leader] draws are the primary vehicle for evoking a sense of meaning\, of belonging\, of orientation\, of welcome\, of acceptance.” Indeed\, the pastoral minister is charged with the immense responsibility to paint a picture of God that does not conflict with what we know of the world. \nIn the same spirit\, this course has been designed to assist those in positions of pastoral ministry who wish to deepen their integration of science and spirituality. It will provide a succinct and introductory overview of the new universe story that has emerged courtesy of evolution and quantum physics\, as well as discuss how such a story offers new horizons for a greater synthesis with our ancient Jewish and Christian stories. We will explore\, in other words\, how our current scientific understanding of the natural world might contribute to meaningful reflection on the active and dynamic presence of God in our lives and the lives of those we serve. With this aim in mind\, we will address such questions as: What is the role of scripture in relation to contemporary science? How might the descriptions of contemporary science furnish us with new metaphors that more nearly capture the spirit of the biblical authors? What exactly is God in an emerging universe? Does evolution have a purpose? What are the interfaith implications of this renewed God-world relationship? Please consider joining us for this important discussion! \n

SUMMARY:Revelation in an Emerging Universe: Faith\, Science\, and Pastoral Ministry
DESCRIPTION:This event is past. Click here to purchase recordings of this series. \nThe course will meet on four consecutive Wednesdays from July 5th to July 26th. \n

SUMMARY:Breaking Down or Breaking Through?
DESCRIPTION:The rapid development of artificial intelligence\, including the new chat GPT software\, has created deep fear in a world already facing a dire future due to global warming. The influx of bad news is creating conditions of global depression and global anxiety disorder. We seem to be working against ourselves\, aiming for our own extinction. But there is another way to read the world map\, that is\, through the eyes of cruciform love. This talk will focus on two questions: what does the world look like if we see its changes driven by the divine energies of love? Can a renewed religious energy revitalize the world? These questions are at the heart of Teilhard’s vision.

SUMMARY:Scripture Meets Science
DESCRIPTION:The greatest obstacle to religion today does not come so much from atheists but from the neo-foundationalists whose fundamental tenets of religion claim ontological certainty. These are the religious fundamentalists whose certainty of divine truths based on the inerrancy of scripture creates division. Their grip on God strips the world of the divine mystery. \n-Ilia Delio (from The Unbearable Wholeness of Being) \n\nJoin us in welcoming Dr. Peter Spitaler who will guide us as we explore avenues of synergy between scripture and science. We will review the state of the conversation\, survey misconceptions that often arise about relationships between the two fields\, and highlight ways in which they complement and enrich each other. \nWe will investigate challenges and opportunities that arise when science and scripture come into contact and how to approach them with a spirit of openness\, curiosity\, and contemplation. We will examine the current state of conversations concerning relationships between science and scripture and explore avenues of synergy between the paths of inquiry and knowing they follow and among the truths that they convey. “Synergy” allows us to understand science and scripture both as separate domains and in their interconnectedness. By considering their interrelation\, we can acquire a more profound comprehension of how they illuminate aspects that are unique to each as well as those that they share. \nCan the joint efforts of scripture and science co-create and produce results that are more significant than what each field could achieve on its own?\nOur goal will be to show that there is nothing less to be gained from bringing science and scripture together than unfolding discoveries of the True\, the Good\, and the Beautiful. \nABOUT DR. PETER SPITALER\nDr. Peter Spitaler is a well-lettered theologian with experience in both academic and practical settings. He has published two books on Paul and his writings: Celebrating Paul: Festschrift in Honor of Jerome Murphy-O’Connor\, O.P.\, and Joseph A. Fitzmyer\, S.J. and Universale Sünde von Juden und Heiden? Eine Untersuchung zu Römer 1:18-3:20. He also has published articles in journals such as Biblical Interpretation\, Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses\, Journal for the Study of the New Testament\, Catholic Biblical Quarterly\, Novum Testamentum\, Revue Biblique\, Filología Neotestamentaria\, Biblica\, and Journal of Biblical Literature.  \nHis research focuses on a variety of topics\, including the study of words and their mistranslations and the meaning of biblical passages related to suffering\, oppression\, doubt\, the biblical view of the poor\, and the metaphorical use of children. Dr. Spitaler has presented his work at international and national conferences\, including the International Meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature and the International Congress of the International Organization for Septuagint and Cognate Studies. He has presented on such diverse topics as the problem of knowing God\, Pauline spirituality and anthropology\, beauty in the New Testament\, forgiveness\, law and righteousness\, symbolic action\, analogical reasoning\, and thinking from the heart.  \nHis teaching traverses various areas of New Testament studies\, including biblical ethics\, spirituality\, theology\, apocalypticism\, and research methods. His classes also explore the intersection of theology and popular culture\, particularly in music and film. His teaching aims to highlight the significance of faith\, reason\, and culture in biblical studies and biblical theology.

SUMMARY:Will Christianity Survive?
DESCRIPTION:The German philosopher Frederick Nietzsche once said\, we must become gods ourselves if we are to live in this world without God. Is this blasphemy or the deeper truth of the Christian message–God becoming flesh?   Today\, the highest levels of theological reflection fail to grasp the import of evolution for the unfolding of the God-world relationship. Early twentieth century biologists realized that biological systems are open\, autopoietic (self-organizing)\, complex and emergent\, revealing one long truth:  life seeks more life.  God is ahead of us\, not behind us\, and if we refuse the reality of a self-involving God\, we risk everything.  We humans are straddling a precipitous moment of cosmic history. \nABOUT TRIPP FULLER\nTripp Fuller received his Ph. D. in Philosophy\, Religion and Theology from the Claremont School of Theology and recently returned to North Carolina after three years as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Theology & Science at the University of Edinburgh. His new book  Divine Self-Investment: a Constructive Open and Relational Christology\, is the first book in the Studies in Open and Relational Theology series.  For over 14 years Tripp has been doing the Homebrewed Christianity podcast (think on-demand internet radio) where he interviews different scholars about their work in a way that reaches people where they are. Last year his podcast had over 4 million downloads. It also inspired a book series with Fortress Press called the Homebrewed Christianity Guides covering topics  such as God\, Jesus\, Spirit\, Church History\, etc. Tripp is a committed  Lakers fan\, as well as a devotee of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings.

SUMMARY:Pantheism in an Age of Entanglement: Rethinking the Meaning of God”
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a webinar with Ilia Delio\n“Pantheism in an Age of Entanglement:  Rethinking the Meaning of God”\nWhat does the word “God” mean?  Many of us grew up with an image of God as an elderly male figure watching over us from above.  This image\, however\, is neither faithful to Scripture nor to our understanding of nature\, as science now describes.  We will explore how the new science provides a new understanding of God and\, in particular\, how God and matter are brought into a unified whole.   This new God paradigm is a game-changer! \nRegister and learn more now!

SUMMARY:God After Einstein: A Book Talk with John Haught
DESCRIPTION:What’s really going on in the universe?\nA Message from Dr. Haught:\nThe point of theology\, as I understand it\, is to explore “the reasons for our hope” (1 Peter 3:15). After Einstein\, theology cannot avoid asking whether the discovery that the cosmos is a long story with interesting outcomes may in some way give us new reasons for hope—or perhaps just the opposite. In 1916 Einstein had not yet fully realized that his general theory of relativity was bringing to light an immense and still unfinished 13.8 billion year old cosmic story. Most stories\, however\, are about something. What then\, after Einstein\, is the cosmic story about—if anything? So far\, both contemporary intellectual culture and traditional Christian theology have found little if any significance\, much less reasons for hope\, in the long journey that nature has been on in its temporal coming-to-be. In this lecture\, however\, I shall be arguing—with one eye on Einstein’s science and another on his personal opinions about religion—that what has been going on in the universe is nothing less than a great awakening and that this awakening\, if we examine it carefully\, comes with good reasons for hope.

SUMMARY:Why Technology has Hijacked the Soul
DESCRIPTION:“Blessed be you\, mighty matter\, irresistible march of evolution\, reality ever newborn; you who\, by constantly shattering our mental categories\, force us to go ever further and further in our pursuit of the truth.” – Pierre Teilhard de Chardin\n\nWe live in a volatile world where catastrophic events seem to happen spontaneously and ever more frequently.    All sorts of reasons are given to explain our global breakdown but\, in a Teilhardian perspective\, there is only one principal reason:  the breakdown of thought.  Our information-driven world has reduced us to algorithms and hijacked our ability to think\, to perceive what is true and good.   We’ve been hacked.   Is there a way forward?   We will discuss the relationship between religion\, evolution and technology to better understand that we are suffering a crisis of soul\, and will not recover until we can freely transcend toward more life.

SUMMARY:Journeys in Process: The Promise of Process Theologies with Don Viney
DESCRIPTION:“There is something too narrow and something missing in the Gospel as presented to us today… Wider horizons\, not a tighter rein—that\, if I am not mistaken\, is the only remedy that can effectively bring our generation back to the ways of truth.”\nPierre Teilhard de Chardin \n\nPhilosophically refined concepts of God from antiquity to the modern period\, both east and west\, pictured God as beyond time and change\, unaffected by the flux of the universe. The very elements of the cosmos were often conceived in static terms\, and nature’s processes depicted as cyclical or lacking direction. It is only in the last three centuries that alternatives to the classical theological traditions have been entertained. More recently\, the advent of a more dynamic\, evolutionary\, and developmental understanding of the universe has often been accompanied by refreshingly new perspectives in philosophical theology. The thinking of philosopher-scientists like A. N. Whitehead\, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin\, and Charles Hartshorne represent important streams of novel ideas about God and the world. In this presentation\, Dr. Don Viney will explore\, and occasionally argue for\, the metaphysical underpinnings of these new theologies\, variously known as “process\,” “process-relational\,” and “openness” theologies. \nDonald Wayne Viney (BA in philosophy 1977\, Colorado State Univ. 1977; MA 1979 and PhD 1982 in philosophy\, the Univ. of Oklahoma) is a three-time recipient of the title of University Professor at Pittsburg State University (Kansas) where he has taught philosophy and religion since 1984. Professor Viney is the author of several books and dozens of articles and reviews in philosophy of religion and he serves on the editorial boards of Process Studies\, The Midwest Quarterly\, Cahiers Jules Lequier\, and The American Journal of Theology and Philosophy. His most recent book\, co-authored with George W. Shields\, is The Mind of Charles Hartshorne: A Critical Examination (Process Century Press\, 2020).

SUMMARY:Fireside Zoom Chat with Ilia Delio: Word Made Matter
DESCRIPTION:The new science gives us a window to see a new understanding of God in the material world.\nWe will explore some of these new insights by talking about matter\, mind and the fires of the heart.\nChristianity is distinguished by its faith claim\, the divine Word became flesh\, which undergirds the doctrine of the incarnation. Many people think this has something to do with Jesus alone\, not with the world of trees\, stars and chickadees. The historian Lynn White said that Christianity is the most anthropocentric of religions\, focused on supernatural grace. Quantum physics dispels these myths by understanding a new role of mind in matter. The new science gives us a window to see a new understanding of God in the material world. We will explore some of these new insights by talking about matter\, mind and the fires of the heart.

SUMMARY:A Zoom Music Concert with Carrie Newcomer
DESCRIPTION:“We have all lived through a time of great unraveling. Yet\, with great disruption comes a possibility for change.\nWe can’t just be healed; we must be transformed.”\nCarrie Newcomer \n\n  \nThe soulful wisdom of singer-songwriter Carrie Newcomer\, dubbed a “prairie mystic” by the Boston Globe\, offers a balm for this anxious and exhausted age of pandemic and political upheaval. \nIn her songs and poems\, Newcomer tells the universal human story of loss\, resiliency\, spiritual connection\, and hope with the grace\, compassion\, and humor that characterizes her work. She turns our eyes and ears to the growing edges of our lives\, and to the liminal spaces—“betwixt and between” times—urging us to “notice what went unnoticed. And then redeeming those bits and pieces by making something new\,” as she writes in the poem Liminality. \nCarrie is known for her low and resonant voice “..as rich as Godiva Chocolate” according to The Austin Statesman\, for her musical depth and the progressive spiritual content of her songs\, poetry and workshops\, and for her continued work in justice\, spiritual and interfaith communities\, and health and hunger organizations. \n\nCarrie Newcomer is a songwriter\, recording artist\, performer and educator. She has been described as a “prairie mystic” by the Boston Globe and one who “asks all the right questions” by Rolling Stone Magazine. Carrie has 19 nationally released albums. \nRecent appearances include PBS Religion and Ethics and Krista Tippett’s On Being. In 2009 and 2011 Newcomer was invited by the American Embassy of India to be a cultural ambassador\, resulting in her interfaith benefit album Everything is Everywhere with master of the Indian Sarod\, Amjad Ali Khan. In 2016 Carrie was awarded an honorary degree in Music for Social Change from Goshen College. In 2019 she received The Shalem Institutes’s Contemplative Voices Award. In recent years Carrie joined with the author Parker J. Palmer on several projects\, including The Growing Edge collaboration which explores growing edges\, personally\, vocationally and politically. SUMMARY:Reality Ever New
DESCRIPTION:“Blessed be you\, mighty matter\, irresistible march of evolution\, reality ever newborn; you who\, by constantly shattering our mental categories\, force us to go ever further and further in our pursuit of the truth.”\nPierre Teilhard de Chardin \n\nWe have a choice now to turn the fate of the earth into a hopeful future. Our lifestyles need to change; our value systems need to change\, and our belief systems need to change. All institutional religions and places of higher education have a responsibility to ensure a new integrative framework of Science and Religion. We are too stuck in the past and not enough concerned for the future. This is not a topic for academics to debate or the topic of another conference; it is the fate of the earth. \nJoin Ilia & Greg for an exploration of the true “Ecclesia Catholica”—a celebration of\, and participation in\, the dynamic wholeness of God’s endless Creation. In Teilhard’s words\, a “Mass on the Altar of the World” has no boundaries of time or space\, culture or nation\, nature or technology. It is an everyday celebration of emerging wholeness whereby we must always welcome—and commit to help shepherd—the newness arising always around us.

SUMMARY:The Cosmic Vision of Teilhard de Chardin with John Haught
DESCRIPTION:Teilhard’s cosmic vision still offers a rich setting for our understanding not only of life\, but also of mind\, morality\, and religion.\nThis webinar brings out the theological distinctiveness of Teilhard’s vision of life by contrasting it with traditional pre-scientific theologies of life on the one hand and contemporary naturalist/materialist interpretations of life and its evolution on the other. Drawing on his two forthcoming books\, The Cosmic Vision of Teilhard de Chardin (Orbis\, December 2021) and God after Einstein (Yale\, March 2022)\, John Haught argues that Teilhard’s cosmic vision still offers a rich setting\, both intellectually and theologically\, for our understanding not only of life\, but also of mind\, morality\, and religion.

SUMMARY:Updating Teilhard de Chardin from a Modern Scientific Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Teilhard uniquely integrated the scientific knowledge of his day with a spiritual view that he regarded as a metamorphosis of the Christian religion. Today\, he has been largely forgotten by scientists and continues to be read mostly for his spiritual quality. This is unfortunate\, because Teilhard was remarkably prescient about developments in evolutionary science that have only taken place during the last few decades. I will provide a broad overview in an attempt to once again integrate the scientific and spiritual dimensions of Teilhard’s thought. \n“The harmony and order that we associate with the word ‘organism’ indeed has a movable boundary that can be expanded to include biological ecosystems\, human societies\, and conceivably the entire earth. Special conditions are required\, however\, and when these conditions are not met\, evolution takes us where we don’t want to go. There is no master navigator for our journey. We must be the navigators\, consciously evolving our collective future\, and without the compass provided by evolutionary theory\, we will surely be lost.”\n—This View of Life\, p xiv \n\nDavid Sloan Wilson is SUNY Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Binghamton University and president of Prosocial World\, whose mission is “to consciously evolve a world that works for all”. His work represents a paradigm shift in evolutionary thinking: from one that was gene-centric\, framed in terms of selfishness\, and insisted that evolution has no purpose\, to one that includes all variation-selection-replication processes\, can explain the evolution of virtue at face value\, and highlights the possibility and necessity of conscious evolution. The new paradigm provides a new set of tools for positive change efforts in the real world. David’s most recent books include This View of Life: Completing the Darwinian Revolution\, Prosocial: Using Evolutionary Science to Build Productive Equitable\, and Collaborative Groups (with Paul W.B Atkins and Steven C. Hayes)\, and his first novel\, Atlas Hugged: The Autobiography of John Galt III. Perhaps the most accessible introduction to David’s work is his conversation with H.H. Dalai Lama and associated podcast\, organized by the Mind and Life Institute.
